Frequently asked questions

Is fashion design an eligible field?

Yes, the fashion discipline, at the university level (professional or student category), is added to the eligible design and architecture fields. Proposals submitted, like all others, must meet the evaluation criteria of one of the prize categories, such as complete reuse of materials, innovation, process and environmental impact, space design or product development.

Can engineers from a consulting firm be eligible in the professional category if they are members of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ)?

Engineers cannot participate alone in this design and architecture competition, but we encourage their participation as part of a team with a representative eligible in one of the following fields: industrial design, urban design, environmental design, interior design, graphic design, architecture, landscape architecture, fashion design.

Can a company create multiple teams and present different proposals for the Olympic idea contest?

A professional or student can only participate in one proposal. It is however possible to form more than one team and therefore submit their proposals, as long as the same person is not part of more than one team.

I would like to propose a revision of the participation criteria. By including participants from diverse backgrounds, such as self-taught individuals with a passion for sustainable design, this competition would benefit from varied and innovative perspectives. Ecology and creativity transcend academic and professional boundaries. Innovators in all fields have proven that they can make a significant contribution to large-scale projects, without formal training in design or architecture; many people around me find this restricted eligibility category distressing. I invite you to consider this amendment in order to enrich the proposals received and to extend the ecological and community impact of the competition.

We understand your disappointment, however this is a design and architecture competition requiring one person, the team representative, to be eligible in the fields of design and architecture. As noted in the competition document (section 8.1). Multidisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged, particularly through collaboration between designers from different disciplines or with the addition of people having special expertise such as engineering, eco-design, urban planning or social work.

In France, a bachelor’s degree in multimedia visual communication doesn’t require a university diploma to work in graphic design and there’s no order or association in this field, as in Québec. Is it still possible to enter the competition?

A French bachelor’s degree doesn’t meet the eligibility requirements for this competition. Without necessarily having a diploma from the French university system, a postgraduate degree in design or architecture is acceptable.

When will it be possible to vote on the various projects (public participation)?

Voting for the People’s Choice Award will take place this summer/fall; the exact date will be communicated at a later date.

The competition document states “Any person who has a professional association with a member of the jury is ineligible to participate in the competition” May a student participate in the competition if the professor is on the jury?

Because the relationship between student and professor is not considered as a professional association, participation is permitted. It is important, however, to ensure that participation confidentiality is maintained and the proposal is not discussed with said professor.

Can the submission deadline be extended? At this busy time of year, this contest’s unexpected appearance makes it challenging to complete within the allotted time frame.

Unfortunately, postponing the date of the deadline is not an option. We hope that despite the tight schedule, participation in the contest might still be considered a possibility.

Is there a 3D file available for the inner and outer membrane structure?

No, there is no 3D file available for these membranes at this time.

Are CEGEP or College students enrolled in industrial design or any other design or architectural techniques, eligible to participate in the competition?

No, these students are not eligible to participate in the competition independently. However, they may form a team with an eligible student in a university-level program, leading to the design or execution of design or development projects (industrial design, urban design, environmental design, interior design, graphic design, architecture, landscape architecture, fashion design).

Presently, I’m not a full-time student, but I haven’t graduated yet. According to the contest rules, only the proposal representative must be a full-time student. Is it possible for me to join a student team?

Yes, joining a student team is possible if the representative of such a team is eligible.

We are a small group of engineering master’s students inquiring if this curriculum could be accepted for participation in the Olympic roof reuse competition, in the student category.

Because this is a design and architecture competition, a person (the team representative) must study one of these fields. As indicated in the competition document (8.1 – Eligibility): “Multidisciplinary team formation is strongly encouraged, with a focus on collaboration between designers from different disciplines or with the inclusion of people with specific expertise, for example in engineering, eco-design, urban planning or social work”. We hope you can team up with an eligible student.

How will the competition documents be delivered?

Upon registration, a download link for the competition documents and annexes will be sent to the candidates.

We are seeking clarification on the notion of conflict of interest. Some of our firm’s employees are collaborating with a jury member on a different unrelated project; can our firm and/or employees be eligible to participate in the contest?

Yes, participation is allowed. The situation presented doesn’t reflect an employment or a professional relationship with a member of the jury, but rather a business relationship (whether active or inactive). It will be necessary, however, to respect the confidentiality of the competition participation process and avoid discussing the proposal with jury members.

I understand that registration is done through an eligible professional for their team, not through a team; is this correct? Also, when will the team members’ names will (or have to be) shared? Do you expect groups to to register as representatives of their firm (e.g. ABC Firm team, Firm DEF, etc.)? If so, are there terms and conditions to be signed and should any marketing representation or association with a firm or company be avoided (e.g. putting the company logo on the poster)?

Yes, registration is done through an individual, namely, the eligible representative. However, when the proposal is submitted, the competitor’s name will be requested. The competitor may be a person or a group of persons; for better clarity, said competitor can also be a firm. When submitting the proposal, you will enter the “Name of the competitor as it will appear when the proposals are published”. This could be a single person, a firm or a team of firms or individuals; as an example and depending on the case, the competitor’s name could be entered as such:

  • Firm ABC – person 1, person 2 and person 3
  • Firm ABC – person 4 and person 5
  • Firm DEF
  • Firm GHI + Firm JKL
  • Team Person 6 and person 7
  • Person 8
    Etc.

When submitting your proposal, for each competitor (person, firm or team of firms or persons), you will be asked to indicate the eligible representative name on the form; the names of the other team members will also be required.

For the terms and conditions to be signed, we have added a clause to be ticked when submitting the proposal which states: “As an authorized representative, I hereby submit a proposal for and on behalf of the competitor. I recognize and agree that the Olympic Park has no obligation to validate my authority with the competitor. I acknowledge that any untruthful or incomplete statements may result in the proposal’s disqualification”.

With regard to the presence of a logo on posters, such is strictly forbidden, since proposals must be submitted anonymously. As indicated in the competition document (10.2 – Method of transmission): “In order to maintain anonymity of the proposals, no part of the file titles or content should allow the competitors to be identifiable. Only the entry form, accessible exclusively to the professional advisor, will permit identifying the participants”.

Would the prize be a cheque issued in the name of the eligible representative, considering the “competitor” consists of multiple individuals?

A single prize payment will be made by direct deposit, either in the name of an eligible representative or the firm (company), depending on the situation or your choice.

Section 5.1.1 of the competition document describes the outer membrane as “composed of 63 mainly triangular panels with a surface area ranging between 286 m² and 906 m²” and also “the removal of the outer fabric will be executed by cutting out triangular sections”. However, in the descriptive table of Annex 1, it would appear that the triangular sections vary from 286.4 m² to 906.4 m² and that once dismantled each membrane’s sections would measure 10 m². Is it possible to know the dimensions of the triangular sections, before and after the dismantling? The same goes for the inner membrane.

The information contained in Annex 1 is accurate and up-to-date. Thus, the precise dimensions of the inner and outer membranes before dismantling are those shown in Annex 1.

Regarding the cutting of sections during dismantling, it is likely that the cut shapes vary (some of which may be of triangular shapes). As indicated in said Annex 1, it is currently planned that most cut membranes (both inner and outer) will each measure 10 m². However, larger membranes may be required depending on necessary reuse needs.
